Organic Hulled Buckwheat

Organic Hulled Buckwheat

Buckwheat is a crop native to East Asia and has been cultivated in China for more than 2000 years. Despite the name, buckwheat groats are not actually a grain, but a fruit seed that is related to rhubarb. Organic buckwheat has a distinctive nutty flavour and can be cooked and served in a similar way to rice.

Served Best

Not only is it a suitable nutritious option for wheat or gluten sensitive people, it is popular with people limiting their grain intake. Organic hulled buckwheat is extremely versatile and can be cooked and served whole or ground into a flour.  Buckwheat is often used to make crackers, bread and noodles. It is also a great substitute for rice and porridge.

How To Cook

Before cooking, buckwheat must be thoroughly rinsed under running water to remove any dirt or debris. Add one-part buckwheat to two parts water or broth. Bring to the boil then reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 30 minutes.

Buckwheat is very high in manganese, which is vital for healthy bone structure, bone metabolism and building essential enzymes. It has been linked to lowering LDL or ‘bad cholesterol’ and is a natural source of protein, various antioxidant plant compounds, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Buckwheat consumption is linked to several health benefits, including improved blood sugar control and heart health.
